The Internet is an Ancient African Technology
Inputting data into columns and rows became the first user-friendly process for retrieving ideas. This process created the first hard copy. The first set of protocols established a set of rules, which made the papyrus plant the material used to transmit data from one hand to the other. Using the Column and Row technique to read data from top to bottom created the first trend in technology called scrolling. The first document used by this method was called a scroll. In today’s world, surfing the Internet, one must scroll from top to bottom.
The Internet
The Internet is the community of computer networks that have agreed to participate and talk to each other. All the connected networks have an understanding that they will use a special language, or protocol, to exchange information. Information on the Internet is transferred by breaking it into small packets of data, each of which can be sent along different routes to the same destination. Computers along the routes read address of each packet and send it on to a machine likely to direct it to its ultimate destination. The packets are reassembled in the correct order by the destination machine. No one computer on the Internet has to know all about the entire network – it only has to know the addresses of machines it’s directly connected to. This makes the Internet robust and flexible, because data can simply flow around any part of the network. There are billions of computers comprising the independent networks that make up the Internet. Each of these networks has a special Internet Protocol address (the "IP address"). The address is actually a four-octet number, such as 111.255.086.101. This numerical address is assigned to a unique alphanumeric name, such as "DCGOGO.COM". This is called the "domain name" address.
Any computer connected to the Internet may be only one machine, but more likely, it itself represents a network of other computers. Each of these computers may host a network, or be just a single machine. These computers and networks can be very different from each other technically; the only thing in common is the agreement to use the Internet Protocol to exchange information.
